The American Cancer Society and The Daily Bread Unite In The Fight!

(Rockledge, FL) The American Cancer Society and the Daily Bread are uniting in the fight to help the poor, hungry and homeless. The American Cancer Society’s 6th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk presented by Lexus of Melbourne will be hosted by The Avenue Viera on October 24, 2009. The goal is to encourage 5,000 fundraisers for the American Cancer Society to bring a minimum of 3 canned goods of soup or vegetables for the Daily Bread.

Both agencies are dedicated to improving the dignity and quality of life of people in need. The American Cancer Society dollars target research, advocacy, education, and patient services for those affected by cancer. “Each day in Brevard County, 9 people will hear the words, “You have cancer,” said Executive Director, Gregory C. Stephens.

The Daily Bread provides free, seven course hot meals, seven days a week to the poor, hungry, and homeless. “An average of 228 people eat at the Daily Bread each day and our stored food surplus is shared with 23 other local agencies who feed the hungry,” said Executive Director John Ferrell.

Registration for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk begins at 7am in front of Michael’s, when walkers can drop off their food donations until the start of the event at 9am. For each donation of 3 canned goods, a chance drawing ticket will be exchanged to qualify participating walkers for various gift baskets donated by Brevard County businesses. The drawing will take place during the closing ceremony. Imagine if the 5,000 walkers each raise $200 and bring 3 canned goods: it will result in a MILLION DOLLARS to fight back against breast cancer and 15,000 cans to help feed the hungry!!

 Eckerd Family Foundation Awards Grant

~ Supports New Alternative to Arrest Program for Youth ~

The Eckerd Family Foundation has announced a grant to begin a new program that will provide an alternative to arrest for Brevard County youth with non-serious offenses. The $174,946 grant provides first-year support for Civil Citation of Brevard County. Civil Citation is an alternative to arrest for children and youth under 18 who commit certain misdemeanor offenses. The program offers law enforcement the option of issuing the youth a civil citation in lieu of arrest. Civil Citation holds all youth accountable for their actions, and, when needed, directs them and their families to immediate services to keep them on track. Civil Citation is an initiative of the Brevard County Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC), located in Cocoa.
Civil Citation of Brevard County was developed by the JAC Advisory Board, which includes all Brevard County police chiefs and representatives from the Office of the State Attorney, Public Defender’s Office, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, School District Public Safety Office, Brevard County, and Crosswinds Youth Services, and with the agreement of the Chief Judge of Circuit 18.
The program will begin as a pilot in the city of Titusville in early October and then be expanded countywide in early 2010.
“We are pleased to support the leadership in Brevard County who have chosen to address these very important issues. The Civil Citation option will achieve better outcomes for youth and their families, contribute to overall public safety and do so in a cost-effective and measurable way,” said Joe Clark, President of the Eckerd Family Foundation.
